A grooved feed bush grips the pellet instead of letting it slip at the barrel wall. On HDPE pipe extrusion that typically lifts output noticeably at the same screw speed, with lower specific energy.
The grooves take heavy wear, so we build the feed section as a replaceable liner with its own water-cooling circuit. When the liner eventually wears you replace that part, not the whole barrel.
