Rust protection, VCI film, blocking inside a heat-treated wooden case - the packing sequence that gets a finished barrel to port intact.
Most transit damage to screw barrels happens for boring reasons: moisture during a three-week voyage, or a crate that lets the barrel roll. Here is the sequence we follow before a case leaves the workshop.
Machining residues and fingerprints are cleaned off, then the machined and nitrided surfaces are treated with rust inhibitor. Threads and bores get particular attention - they are where corrosion starts.
VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) film plus desiccant bags inside the wrapping. VCI film matters more than people expect: it protects surfaces the inhibitor spray never reaches.
The barrel or screw is fixed in a wooden case with shaped blocks so it cannot roll or slide, then strapped. Nothing moves when the case is tilted - that is the test we apply.
